It’s more than likely that a large chunk of the sim racing community turns to Assetto Corsa because they want to drive a high-quality single-seater mod.

Thankfully, there is a vast array of high-quality open-wheeler mods available – and it’s not all just F1 cars either.

Below, we’ve listed what we think are five of the best single-seater mods you can download for AC now, including both free and paid examples from top modding groups like Race Sim Studio (RSS), Virtual Racing Cars (VRC) and ASR Formula.

5) ASR OWC 1991 v1.1

ASR OWC 1991

ASR Formula specialises in creating historic Formula 1 mods, and its 1991 collection is widely considered among its best.

Featuring all the teams, drivers and cars of the ‘91 season, ASR’s OWC 1991 mod is a comprehensive record of what turned out to be a thrilling battle between McLaren’s Ayrton Senna and Williams’ Nigel Mansell.

ASR has worked on providing distinctive sounds for the season’s Ferrari, Honda, Ford, Renault, Yamaha, Judd, and Ilmor engines, and has also developed separate physics for each chassis – impressive work considering the lack of source material available.

The best bit is, it’s all free, but you can also unlock further liveries, cars and more detailed 3D models for the ‘91 mod by purchasing the optional Coloni C4 DLC for €4.99.

ASR’s work may not rival the ultimate polish presented by RSS or VRC, but the studio deserves praise for creating several all-encompassing F1 mods for the sim racing community.

4) RSS Formula Americas 2020

RSS Formula Americas 2020

RSS’s Formula Americas 2020 car is a facsimile of the Dallara IR-18 as used in the North American IndyCar Series, featuring both road course and oval configurations.

Although the cars have the halo safety device, they do not include the championship’s new hybrid system, which was first introduced in the middle of the 2024 season.

RSS has simulated the push-to-pass mechanic, however, which provides a temporary power boost of around 40 bhp, with drivers in 2025 able to use as much as 20s at a time, with a total allowance of 200s (although this changes based on the track choice). Ensure that you map this via the KERS option in control settings.

Despite forgoing separate Honda and Chevrolet engine options, the V6 motors on the Formula Americas sound wonderful, with optional skin packs available for those who wish to add some present-day immersion (although I’ve only found skin packs up to 2023 thus far).

Luckily, RSS has programmed the car to feel intuitive to drive, too, which just gives it an edge over VRC’s Formula NA – 2021 equivalent, in our opinion.

3) 2005 Renault R25 / 2005 McLaren MP4-20 – VRC

VRC created mods of two 2005 F1 cars: the Renault R25 and the McLaren MP4-20.

These unlicensed cars are available to download for free from Overtake and capture the spirit of the final days of F1’s incredible V10 era.

With V8s becoming the norm from 2006, these ‘05 cars demonstrate F1 in what many consider its purest form. Although the cars have traction control, demanding an unusual driving style, there are no ERS or DRS systems to worry about, making it easier to focus on the next apex.

As expected, the McLaren and Renault have been modelled beautifully, with sounds to match, and are a refreshingly nimble change to bulky modern-day open-wheelers.

The two cars were the class of the 2005 field, with Renault’s Fernando Alonso taking the championship from the hard-charging Kimi Räikkönen in the fast-but-fragile McLaren.

Controversially, 2005 also saw a ban on mid-race tyre changes and a reduction in front downforce levels, but make no mistake, these cars are still a hoot to drive.

2) Formula RSS Supreme 2025 – RSS

Formula RSS Supreme 2025
Formula RSS Supreme 2025

The Formula RSS Supreme 2025 is based on a Super Formula car, the main protagonist of Japan’s premier single-seater category.

Although little-known in European and North American circles, Super Formula has been a breeding ground for top F1 talent over the years, with drivers like Liam Lawson, Pierre Gasly, Eddie Irvine, Jean Alesi and even Michael Schumacher (who made a one-off appearance), all plying their trade in The Land of the Rising Sun.

There’s a reason why Super Formula (formerly known as Formula Nippon, and a few other monikers) is a proving ground for F1: the cars are fast. Super fast.

Today, Super Formula’s Honda and Toyota-powered Dallara SF23 chassis are second only to F1 in terms of pace, and the RSS Supreme is a blast to drive on any high-speed circuit.

Take it for a spin at Suzuka, for example, and you’ll quickly find that it’s a car that’s both engaging to drive and frighteningly capable.

The car comes with five different engine maps and 10 different throttle maps, plus an overtake boost system (OTS) to mimic the real-world car. The OTS provides a temporary boost of power to promote overtaking, with RSS providing a specially-made app to monitor its use.

The RSS Supreme comes with all the hallmarks of the studio’s incredible modelling ability, with the real car’s piercing, four-cylinder exhaust note also perfectly simulated.

1)  Formula Hybrid Alpine 2025 – RSS

The Formula Hybrid Alpine 2025 is RSS’s latest single-seater mod, and it’s based on a modern Formula 1 car.

RSS already sells up-to-date 2023 and 2024 F1 machinery, but the latest Formula Hybrid is notable for its official Alpine Sim Racing branding.

The tie-in with the F1 team’s official esports outfit provides RSS with unprecedented access to real-world data, resulting in perhaps the most detailed F1 car in all of sim racing.

The Alpine 2025 utilises the Custom Shaders Patch’s advanced physics to control the car’s complex hybrid systems, enabling players to modify ERS modes, adjust brake migration, and alter several other systems on the fly.

Most impressively, it’s possible to customise the ERS deployment of your car on a track-by-track and sector-by-sector basis, which helps optimise lap times. This is a feature missing from most dedicated sims, and its appearance in an AC mod is nothing short of remarkable.

The car has too many systems and set-up options to list, but they’d be useless if the Alpine 2025 wasn’t great to drive, which, thankfully, it is.

Its powerful aerodynamics give you so much confidence to attack high-speed corners on circuits like Zandvoort, Spa-Francorchamps and Silverstone, while its exhaust note is practically perfect when compared to the real deal.

The attention to detail is second-to-none, with the car’s steering wheel featuring a carbon fibre weave that perfectly mimics Alpine’s 2025 F1 car.

If you only buy one single-seater mod for AC, make it this one.

Honourable mentions

These are just a small selection of AC’s single-seater offerings. For more, check out any of RSS or VRC’s works, with VRC offering the McLenna MC22 and Ferrenzo F07 (2007 McLaren and Ferrari F1 cars) for free.

RSS also offers three free single-seater cars, including a 1979 F1 car, and these make an excellent entry point to the studio’s work. ASR also has full season packs for most F1 championships between 1982 and 2007, plus higher-quality one-off models.

For more AC single-seater content, you can also check out Kunos Simulazioni’s own cars, including a wide range of classic and modern open-wheelers, boosted by a number of optional DLC packs.
